The Mercado del Olivar is the largest covered market in Palma, a bright building characterized by its L-shaped plan and two perpendicular halls that meet in the middle. Opened in nineteen fifty-one, the structure was designed to provide a centralized, hygienic space for the city's food trade, replacing the older wholesale market that had long operated in the Plaza Mayor. The municipal architect Antonio García Ruiz Rosselló directed the construction of the building, which features entrances on all four sides to accommodate the heavy flow of shoppers.
