Grosse Staatsschleuse

The Grosse Staatsschleuse, also known as the Obere Schleuse, is defined by its five distinct wooden gates that regulate the flow of the Aare River as it moves from Lake Brienz toward Lake Thun. Built in eighteen fifty-four and eighteen fifty-five, this structure sits on the border between the municipalities of Interlaken and Unterseen. It functions as a critical part of the regional water management system, preventing the lake levels from dropping too low during the winter months.
