The Kursaal Interlaken is easily recognized by the large, ornate floral clock set within the manicured grounds of its public garden. This site has served as the social and cultural heart of Interlaken since eighteen fifty-nine, when it first opened as a "Kurhaus," or cure house, to entertain wealthy spa visitors who traveled here for the fresh mountain air.
