Monterey Canning Company

The Monterey Canning Company is a large, two-story structure defined by its Mission Revival false front, which features the company name in prominent letters. Built in nineteen seventeen by mining engineer Alexander MacMillan Allan, this complex was a major player during the World War I sardine boom. Allan, who had previously founded the Point Lobos Abalone Company, established the cannery to capitalize on the soaring demand for canned fish. It was uniquely designed with faux espadana street-front facades, a style that set it apart from the more utilitarian, corrugated steel buildings that dominated the rest of the shoreline.
