McAbee Beach is a crescent of golden sand framed by rock outcroppings, sitting tucked between the modern structures of Cannery Row. While it appears as a quiet pocket of shoreline today, it was the site of a nineteenth-century try-works where Portuguese whaling crews dragged harpooned whales ashore to render blubber into lamp oil.
