California's First Theatre

California's First Theatre is an adobe and wood building at the corner of Pacific and Scott Streets. English sailor Jack Swan originally constructed the site between eighteen forty-five and eighteen forty-seven, using timber salvaged from a shipwreck to build a tavern and boarding house for visiting mariners. The structure grew over time, eventually incorporating a long adobe section that became the setting for the earliest paid theatrical performances in the state.
