Cannery Row is marked by the presence of large, historic industrial structures, many of which still feature elevated wooden crossovers that once connected waterfront cannery buildings to operations across the street. Originally known as Ocean View Avenue, this waterfront district was the epicenter of a massive sardine industry that peaked during the nineteen-forties. At that time, more than thirty canneries and reduction plants operated along this rocky coastline, fueled by the nutrient-rich waters of the Monterey Bay.
