Old Custom House

The Old Custom House is a Spanish Colonial adobe structure with a prominent two-story porch and a tiled hipped roof. Built in eighteen twenty-seven, it served as the primary entry point for foreign trade when Mexico opened California’s ports. As the oldest government building in the state, it represents the era when Monterey functioned as the capital of Alta California and a bustling international harbor.
