Colton Hall Museum and Jail

Colton Hall is a two-story building of white Monterey shale featuring a portico and a pediment supported by two columns. Built between eighteen forty-seven and eighteen forty-nine, it was the largest public building in California at the time. Its founder, Walter Colton, the first American alcalde of Monterey, funded the project through taxes on liquor, fines on gamblers, and the labor of local convicts.
