House of the Four Winds

The House of the Four Winds is a white-plastered adobe structure at five hundred forty Calle Principal, recognizable by the green-painted doors and windows set into its thick walls. Thomas Oliver Larkin, a businessman and diplomat, built the house in the late eighteen thirties. He chose the name La Casa de Los Vientos, or House of the Four Winds, because he installed a weather vane on its hipped roof, a novelty that drew attention in Monterey at the time.
