The Market Street Railway Substation is a solid brick and sandstone building at the corner of Fillmore and Turk Streets. Constructed in nineteen oh two, it served as a vital power source when the city’s transit network converted from horse-drawn carriages to electricity. The building survived the nineteen oh six earthquake and fire, and its continued operation allowed the Fillmore Street rail line to become one of the first in the city to return to service.
