Five hundred fifty-five California Street is identifiable by its dark, polished red Carnelian granite facade, which is covered in thousands of faceted bay windows. Completed in nineteen sixty-nine, the fifty-two-story tower was designed by the firm Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill to serve as the global headquarters for the Bank of America. Its height of seven hundred seventy-nine feet made it the tallest building west of the Mississippi River at the time of its opening.
