The Belli Building at seven twenty-two Montgomery Street is a brick structure with a facade that has stood since eighteen fifty-one. Built on a foundation of heavy wood planks originally laid in the mud of the historic Yerba Buena Cove, the building was famously acquired in nineteen fifty-nine by the flamboyant trial lawyer Melvin Belli. Known as the King of Torts, Belli operated his law firm here for decades, often hoisting a Jolly Roger flag up the building’s exterior whenever he won a major courtroom victory.
