Lorraine Hansberry Theatre

The Lorraine Hansberry Theatre is defined by its role as the oldest continuously producing African American professional theatre company on the West Coast. Founded in nineteen eighty-one by Stanley E. Williams and Quentin Easter, the institution was built on a modest fifteen hundred dollars and a commitment to creating works by, for, and about the Black experience. It is named for the playwright Lorraine Hansberry, who wrote the landmark drama *A Raisin in the Sun* while living in the Bay Area.
