Sans Souci Valley comprises a stretch of land within the historic geography of Hayes Valley. This low-lying area functioned as a natural drainage basin, capturing storm water from surrounding hills and directing it toward the eastern marshlands. The name, French for without worry, originates from the Sanssouci Palace in Germany, yet gained local recognition during the nineteenth century through a roadhouse that occupied the intersection of Fulton and Divisadero Streets.
