The Alcazar Theatre at six hundred fifty Geary Street stands out for its ornate, Moorish-inspired facade, featuring intricate details reminiscent of the Alhambra palace in Spain. While it functions as a theater today, the structure was originally built in nineteen seventeen as the Islam Temple for the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Designed by Scottish-born architect Thomas Patterson Ross, himself a member of the fraternal organization, the building combined lodge rooms with a ground-floor garage to generate income for charitable projects.
