The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel stands as a seventeen-story tower of light-colored brick at four hundred ninety-five Geary Street. Designed by architects George Applegarth and Kenneth MacDonald Junior, the building opened on February first, nineteen fifteen, to host visitors arriving for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Its owner, Frederick Clift, promoted the structure as the city's first fire and earthquake-proof hotel, a reputation intended to signal San Francisco's recovery following the nineteen oh six disaster.
