The Shaking Man is a life-size bronze sculpture of a businessman who appears to vibrate in place, his form split into three interconnected figures as if captured in a rapid, jerky movement. Standing near the edge of the terrace at Yerba Buena Gardens, the figure extends one of several hands, inviting passersby to take it for a shake. Artist Terry Allen completed this piece in nineteen ninety-three, giving the executive a briefcase and a stiff, business-like posture that conflicts with his strange, blurred motion.
