Millennium Park is a twenty-four and a half acre expanse defined by its stainless steel curves and massive, modern art installations, all built atop a sprawling underground parking garage and commuter rail lines. In the late nineteen nineties, this space was an industrial wasteland of tracks and gravel. The project began after city officials successfully challenged the railroad’s rights to the land, allowing Mayor Richard M. Daley to initiate what became the most expensive public construction in the city's history.
