Mather Tower

Mather Tower rises at seventy-five East Wacker Drive as an exceptionally slender, Neo-Gothic terra cotta silhouette. Often called the Inverted Spyglass, the building features a rectangular twenty-four-story base topped by a narrow, eighteen-story octagonal spire. This needle-like form was designed by Herbert Hugh Riddle and completed in nineteen twenty-eight, shaped largely by the Chicago Zoning Ordinance of nineteen twenty-three, which required towers to set back as they gained height.
