The John Hancock Center is recognizable by the dark, X-shaped steel bracing that crisscrosses its tapering, pyramid-like silhouette. Standing one hundred stories tall at eight hundred seventy-five North Michigan Avenue, this skyscraper was designed by architect Bruce Graham and structural engineer Fazlur Khan. Completed in nineteen sixty-nine, the structure represents a significant shift in high-rise engineering, as the external X-braces allow the frame to support its own weight, freeing up interior floor space.
