The Drake Hotel is defined by its pink neon sign, a fixture on the Chicago skyline since nineteen forty, and its limestone facade overlooking the junction of Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue. Designed by Benjamin Howard Marshall and Charles Eli Fox, this fourteen-story building opened on New Year’s Eve in nineteen twenty to host two thousand of the city’s most prominent citizens. It was developed by brothers John and Tracy Drake, who intended for the site to function as an urban resort.
