Atomic Liquors

Atomic Liquors on Fremont Street is identified by a large, vintage neon sign perched above the entrance. It began as a small eatery called Virginia’s Café, founded in nineteen forty-five by Virginia Barrett and managed by her daughter Stella and her husband Joe Sobchik. As nuclear testing began at the Nevada Test Site sixty-five miles away, locals and visitors alike realized the roof of the café offered a clear vantage point for the bright flashes and mushroom clouds.
