The Loretto Chapel is identifiable by its Gothic Revival exterior, modeled after the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Completed in eighteen seventy-eight, the structure features sandstone walls and stained glass windows imported from France. It was commissioned by the Sisters of Loretto for their girls' academy after Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy invited them to Santa Fe in eighteen fifty-three.
