The St. Regis New York is distinguished by an eighteen-story Beaux-Arts limestone facade and ornate iron balconies that rise above the southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and Fifty-Fifth Street. Opened in September nineteen oh four, the hotel was developed by Colonel John Jacob Astor the fourth, who envisioned a residence so luxurious it would rival the finest homes and hotels in Europe. Astor spared no expense on the project, insisting on advanced features like a telephone in every room and a central air-cooling system to ensure his guests enjoyed the pinnacle of modern comfort.
