Shubert Theatre

The Shubert Theatre is marked by its exterior walls, which feature intricate, pale patterns carved into tinted plaster using a rare technique called sgraffito. Built in nineteen thirteen, this theater was designed by Henry Beaumont Herts as a memorial to Sam S. Shubert, a theatrical producer who died in a railroad accident eight years earlier. The building sits alongside the Booth Theatre, and the two houses share this unique, decorative Venetian Renaissance facade, as well as the private passage known as Shubert Alley that runs between them.
