St. Patrick’s Cathedral occupies a full city block of Midtown Manhattan, its white Tuckahoe marble façade and twin spires rising three hundred thirty feet above Fifth Avenue. It is the seat of the Archbishop of New York and the largest Gothic Revival Catholic cathedral in North America. When Archbishop John Hughes first announced plans for this site in eighteen fifty-three, the location was considered so far uptown and isolated that critics mockingly dubbed the project "Hughes’ Folly."
