The Helmsley Building is a thirty-five-story skyscraper that stands over Park Avenue, its base designed with two massive arched portals that allow city traffic to flow directly through the structure. Completed in nineteen twenty-nine as the New York Central Building, it served as the headquarters for the New York Central Railroad. Architects Warren and Wetmore designed it as the crown of Terminal City, an ambitious complex of hotels and offices built over the railway yards surrounding Grand Central Terminal.
