Richard Rodgers Theatre

cultural

The Richard Rodgers Theatre is identified by the three double-height arches of its white brick and terracotta facade, a design inspired by a Renaissance loggia. Built in nineteen twenty-four for real estate developer Irwin S. Chanin, it opened the following year as the forty-sixth Street Theatre. It was the first venue on Broadway to feature democratic seating, a design choice where all patrons used a single main entrance regardless of whether they held tickets for the orchestra or the balcony.
