Madison Square Garden is a circular, drum-shaped arena that rises directly above the platforms and tracks of Pennsylvania Station. While its name connects it to a park more than twenty blocks to the northeast, this is actually the fourth building to carry the title since eighteen seventy-nine. The current structure, which opened in nineteen sixty-eight, occupies the site of the former Penn Station, a grand beaux-arts terminal whose controversial demolition sparked a historic preservation movement that reshaped city planning.
