The Curtis Institute of Music occupies a collection of historic mansions at the corner of eighteenth and Locust Streets, identifiable by their grand, residential architecture that anchors this corner near Rittenhouse Square. Founded in nineteen twenty-four by Mary Louise Curtis Bok, the conservatory was established to provide an elite musical education to exceptionally gifted students regardless of their financial means. Bok, the daughter of the powerful publishing magnate Cyrus Curtis, used her family’s fortune to create a school where talent alone determined admission.
