Saint Mark's Church

Saint Mark's Church is identifiable by its dark, irregular brownstone walls and a soaring bell tower that rises above the buildings on Locust Street. Completed between eighteen forty-seven and eighteen forty-nine, the church was designed by architect John Notman to serve as a beacon for the Oxford Movement, a religious revival that sought to reclaim medieval liturgical practices. Its Gothic Revival exterior and interior stone columns were intended to feel as authentic as an English country church from the fourteenth century.
