The Declaration House is a three-story red-brick building standing on the corner of seventh and Market Streets. Originally built in seventeen seventy-five by a bricklayer named Jacob Graff, the house served as a quiet retreat for Thomas Jefferson during the summer of seventeen seventy-six. While serving as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, Jefferson rented two rooms on the second floor, where he spent three weeks drafting the Declaration of Independence.
