Congress Hall

Congress Hall is a two-story red brick building with a triangular pediment at the corner of Chestnut and Sixth Streets. While it was constructed between seventeen eighty-seven and seventeen eighty-nine to serve as the Philadelphia County Courthouse, it gained national prominence when it became the seat of the United States Congress from seventeen ninety to eighteen hundred. During this decade, Philadelphia served as the temporary capital of the United States, and the building hosted the second inauguration of George Washington and the inauguration of John Adams.
