The Liberty Bell is instantly recognizable by the wide, jagged fissure that runs from its lip up into the metal. This two-thousand-pound bronze bell, forged from a mix of copper and tin, hangs from a yoke of American elm. Originally commissioned in seventeen fifty-one to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of William Penn’s Charter of Privileges, it was intended to call lawmakers to the Pennsylvania State House.
