St. Peter's Church, Philadelphia

St. Peter’s Church, located at the corner of Third and Pine Streets, is defined by its long, barn-like structure and a brick tower topped with a tall, eight-sided wooden spire. Built between seventeen fifty-eight and seventeen sixty-one, the church originally served as a chapel of ease for parishioners of Christ Church who were moving into the developing neighborhood of Society Hill. The building was designed by Robert Smith, a prominent master builder who also worked on Carpenters' Hall. It is one of the few colonial-era churches that retains much of its original interior, including the high-walled box pews that were once used to keep congregants warm during winter services.
