Lit Brothers

The Lit Brothers building occupies a full city block between Seventh and Eighth Streets on Market Street, standing out as Philadelphia's only complete block of Victorian commercial architecture. It is composed of thirty-three separate buildings constructed between eighteen fifty-nine and nineteen eighteen, unified behind a facade of brick, marble, granite, and occasional cast iron. A surviving neon sign near the main entrance still reads, "Hats Trimmed Free of Charge," a reminder of the structure's origins as a massive, bustling department store.
