Historic Market Square is a three-block outdoor plaza defined by its wide, pedestrian-friendly walkways and the enclosed El Mercado building, which houses dozens of specialty shops. It stands as the largest Mexican market in the United States and sits on land originally granted by the King of Spain in seventeen thirty for agricultural use. While the site functioned as a central produce hub for generations, its current layout and the air-conditioned El Mercado building were part of a nineteen seventies urban renewal project.
