The King William Historic District is defined by its wide, tree-lined streets and a dense concentration of stately homes built in the Greek Revival, Victorian, and Italianate styles. Originally farmland for the Mission San Antonio de Valero, the area was parceled out in the nineteenth century and became a residential enclave for prosperous German merchants. Surveyor Ernst Hermann Altgelt built the first home here in eighteen sixty-six and named the primary street for King Wilhelm the First of Prussia.
