Alameda Theater

The Alameda Theater stands out on West Houston Street for its eighty-six-foot-tall marquee, illuminated by over one thousand pieces of cold cathode lighting. When it opened on March tenth, nineteen forty-nine, this Streamline Moderne movie palace served as the largest venue in the United States dedicated specifically to Spanish-language films and live performances. Designed by architect N. Straus Nayfach, the theater was developed by entrepreneur Gaetano Lucchese to celebrate the cultural relationship between San Antonio and Mexico.
