Yungay Square

Plaza Yungay is defined by the central bronze statue of a man known as the Roto Chileno. This monument, inaugurated in eighteen eighty-eight, shows a person of humble origins standing with a rifle in his right hand and a sack of wheat at his feet. The figure commemorates the victory of Chilean troops in the Battle of Yungay on January twentieth, eighteen thirty-nine, during the war against the Peru-Bolivian Confederation.
