Halmtorvet, or the Haymarket, is an oblong public square in the Vesterbro district that served as a central hub for livestock and agricultural trade. Originally situated closer to the city center, the market relocated to this site in eighteen eighty-eight to sit beside the new livestock market. On market days, hundreds of carts loaded with hay and straw arrived here to supply the city's stables.
