The National Museum of Denmark is housed within the Prince's Palace, a grand eighteenth-century building featuring a diminutive green gate and a low balustrade facing the Frederiksholms Kanal. Designed by the architect Nicolai Eigtved between seventeen forty-three and seventeen forty-four, the structure originally served as a home for Crown Prince Frederik, later King Frederik the Fifth, and Crown Princess Louise. Its four wings enclose a small courtyard, preserved in the elegant Rococo style that defined much of Copenhagen’s aristocratic architecture during the period.
