Rådhuspladsen, or City Hall Square, is recognizable by the grand red-brick City Hall that defines its southwestern edge, crowned by a tall, distinctive clock tower. Once the site of the city’s western fortifications and a hay market, the square was transformed into a public space following the construction of the current City Hall, which opened in nineteen oh five. Architect Martin Nyrop designed the building to evoke the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, Italy, and modeled the plaza itself on the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo.
