Freetown Christiania is an intentional community defined by the remnants of the Bådsmandsstræde military barracks and its surrounding seventeenth-century ramparts. You can identify the area by its distinct lack of private car traffic and its sprawling, informal collection of converted military buildings and experimental, hand-built homes. It occupies land reclaimed by King Christian IV in the seventeenth century to defend the city.
