The Palais du Rhin dominates the Place de la République with a massive dome and a sprawling yellow sandstone facade that stretches one hundred and twenty-eight meters. Built between eighteen eighty-four and eighteen eighty-nine, this neo-Renaissance structure was designed by Prussian architect Hermann Eggert to serve as an imperial residence for the German emperors. Its imposing scale and decorative eagles were intended to project the permanence of the German Empire in Alsace following the Franco-Prussian War.
