Church of Saint-Étienne

religious

The Church of Saint-Étienne is marked by a wide transept and a triple apse that stand as the primary survivors of a long history of destruction. Located within the Saint-Étienne college complex, the site occupies ground that held a Roman sanctuary and later a monastery founded in seven seventeen by Duke Adalbert of Alsace. Pilgrims once flocked here to visit the relics of Saint Attale, the duke’s daughter and the monastery's first abbess, providing the wealth to rebuild the church in the twelfth century.
