The Palais Universitaire is a sprawling neo-Renaissance structure identified by its thirty-six statues lining the facade, which pay tribute to major figures in science and the arts. Built between eighteen seventy-nine and eighteen eighty-four under the direction of architect Otto Warth, the palace was commissioned by the German Empire to serve as the heart of its new Imperial University in Strasbourg. Its design, inspired by Italian classical architecture, features a prominent central dome and a grand ceremonial hall known as the Aula.
