The Palais Rohan is distinguished by its golden-yellow sandstone facade and a grand northern entrance gateway shaped like a triumphal arch. Built between seventeen thirty-two and seventeen forty-two, the palace was commissioned by Cardinal Armand-Gaston de Rohan-Soubise, the Prince-Bishop of Strasbourg. His goal was to solidify the presence of the French crown and the Catholic Church in a city that had long been a stronghold of Protestantism.
