Place de la République is defined by a central, circular garden featuring ginkgo biloba trees, which were presented to the German Emperor by the Emperor of Japan in the eighteen eighties. This expansive, square-shaped space serves as the heart of the Neustadt, or new town, an urban project launched during the German annexation of Alsace-Lorraine to transform Strasbourg into a grand imperial capital.
